Have you ever felt less than? Or dreaded a social situation, project or activity because you don’t think you measure up to the other participants?

We all encounter awkward situations and scenarios that make us feel insecure, and this will go on throughout life. It’s all about “expanding your horizons” and “building new skills”, yada-yada…

But you know what’s really hard? Being a young adult. Trying to figure out what you like and don’t like and trying to understand your body, your peers and yourself present as some of the most challenging moments of your life. And in a school setting, you’re being held to the same standard as every other kid in your class even though everyone has different abilities, skills and interests. One place where this has happened historically is in P.E. classes. While all students must meet state standards, it’s important to keep in mind that some kids are more athletically inclined, some are faster, some are more strategic, and some just aren’t interested.

The purpose of a physical education class isn’t to force kids to compete against each other in various sports. It’s to teach them healthy activity behaviors that will last a lifetime and to give them the tools they need to take care of their physical and mental health through school and beyond.

We live in a world where things are constantly shifting and changing, so why hasn’t Physical Education evolved to meet the needs and wants of our student population? We think it’s time to reimagine what Physical Education looks like – which is why we started talking about exceptional physical education. So, what is it? Well, first let’s talk about what it’s not:

  • It’s not a one-size-fits-all option
  • It’s not anxiety inducing for anyone
  • It’s not an elective course, it’s a necessary subject area

An exceptional Physical Education program will set students up for success by teaching them to move with competence and confidence in a variety of activities. It’s an intentional, inspiring and inclusive class for everyone – a class that students look forward to. Above all, an exceptional physical education program is inclusive, diverse and safe – it offers education, instruction, motivation, support and more. It assists with developing and upholding a positive school culture that will transcend classroom and traditional physical education settings.

Hiveclass now offers a standards-based curriculum for physical education departments to help offer more choice and scale instruction. Included in the curriculum are hundreds of professionally produced, short-form videos, covering movement skills across a range of sports and activities. Various assessments, cognitive concepts, and character development modules make this more than just another physical activity product but rather physical wellness education. Aligned with SHAPE America national standards, and designed by top physical educators starring youth athletes, we are thrilled to bring Better P.E. by Hiveclass to school districts across the U.S. beginning Fall 2022. Incorporating Hiveclass into an existing physical education program can elevate it to be truly exceptional!

When kids have access to quality, exceptional physical education they have the power and ability to explore a variety of physical activities, gain skills that will help them succeed in other areas of life and foster healthy development of their whole person.
